Plenty to do on First Fridays in Savannah

by Shawndra Russell, Guest Blogger for Visit Savannah

The Hostess City kicks off every month with a bang. And while plenty of Savannah must-dos lie within the parameters of its Historic District, First Fridays are a great opportunity to go beyond these boundaries in both directions. North of Savannah’s Riverfront, you’ll find a twist on a Lowcountry tradition at the Westin. To the south of Forsyth Park, a funky, SCAD-influenced neighborhood awaits. Here’s my advice for getting the most out of your First Friday experience in Savannah:

Start in SoFo at 6PM

The SoFo District—“South of Forsyth” and north of Victory Drive—attracts artists, SCAD students, and creative entrepreneurs year-round, but on First Fridays, a special event called Art March takes place. The quirky restaurants, shops and galleries hold extended hours until 9PM to offer up a true taste of Savannah’s local talent. Art March is open to all-ages for a night of community, music, food and most importantly, fabulous art.

Some February 1 highlights:

Head to The Westin Savannah for Fireworks and First Friday Oyster Roast 7-10PM

Take the free ferry across the Savannah River—in itself is a small treat—which departures about every 20 minutes from River Street behind City Hall. On the other side awaits a Savannah-style oyster roast, live music and plenty of grub. Plus, The Westin Savannah side of the river provides the most beautiful sweeping view of our Historic Riverfront—my favorite view of Savannah!—and will give you a spectacular spot to watch the Fireworks on the River that start at 9:30.

February 1 highlights include:

  • S’mores by the firepits
  • Local favorites A Nickel Bag of Funk band performing
  • Buckets of oysters and a full bar
