Girls at Isle of Hope

Plan a picnic on Isle of Hope

The tourists may flock to Savannah for the history and southern charm of the Historic District, but there’s one area in Savannah, just a 20-minute drive outside of our city’s heart, that has tourists changing their plans.

The Moon River District is steeped in all things history, nature and education. This district takes Savannah back to its roots with numerous historical sites and plenty of opportunities to explore. The lure of the Low country is calling out to the travelers looking for a little more adventure. This district is made up of six sites and one centuries-old waterfront village. Here are our recommendations for gaining the full experience of the Moon River District.

01
Head to Isle of Hope

The Isle of Hope is mainly a residential neighborhood perched on the Moon River, but the work of the area’s historical association is evident by the preservation of the architectural and cultural heritage of the buildings. If your schedule permits, make the drive when the sun has just started to set. It’s a view you won’t soon forget!

02
Spend the Day (or Night) at the Skidaway Island State Park

Open daily, the Skidaway Island State Park is perfect for a camping trip or an outing filled with adventure. Walk the six miles of trails to experience the maritime forest and coastal marshes. Rent a bike to leisurely take in the grounds and Colonial Coast Bird Trail (or, for the off-rode dare-devils, ride the Big Ferry Trail). The park also has a program facility, where you can learn more about the unique environment, history of the area and anything else you want to know about Skidaway Island!

03
Watch Marine Creatures at the University of Georgia’s Aquarium

Filled with all the creatures of the deep…well, at least the ones that are native to the Savannah area, the University of Georgia’s Aquarium is a wonderful spot to spend the afternoon, especially for youngsters interested in marine life. Most of the species are caught right off the coast. This aquarium is actually Georgia’s first saltwater aquarium and features 16 exhibit tanks!

04
Visit Pin Point Heritage Museum

The Pin Point Heritage Museum allows visitors to explore the Gullah-Geechee community, guided by a local. Take a step back in time and experience the life of the area’s past residents. The museum, previously the Pin Point Oyster Factory (which ran from 1926-1985), tells the story of how a community made a living by the water that surrounds Savannah.

05
Have a Fishing Adventure

Climb aboard an impressive 25 ft. vessel for an inshore or offshore fishing excursion. Show off your skills or get your first bite with local expert Captain David Newlin Fishing Charters. With over 40 years of fishing experience, he is a master at his craft, offering shark and big game trips for groups of 1-4 people. With precision, you'll venture into the deep coastal waters for an exciting and memorable adventure with this full-time professional Captain.

06
Immerse Yourself In History

As we’ve said, the Moon River District celebrates history. It encourages visitors to engage with the past and the natural beauty of the area. At the Wormsloe Historic Site, one of Georgia’s oldest plantations, take a scenic drive on the world’s longest road of live oaks. Planted in 1891, this 1.5 mile avenue of oaks adorned with Spanish moss create an absolutely stunning view and picturesque scene. At the Ossabaw Island Heritage Preserve, explore this 26,000-acre barrier island of undeveloped land only accessible by boat! At the Bethesda Academy, learn how a land grant from King George II for 500 acres was transformed into a spiritual, cultural, and educational oasis that still stands today.
