Jolly Holidays in Savannah

By LeAndrea Mikell, Public Relations Intern, Visit Savannah

I must admit — I’m a kid at heart, and I still get excited about all there is to do in Savannah this time of year. The holidays are a special time for family, and Savannah offers so many activities that are sure to make your little elves jolly. There’s nothing better than the light in their eyes and the smile on their face as your kids’ favorite celebrity makes a special appearance. No, it’s not Justin Bieber. I’m talking about Santa Claus!

As your little ones await the day that Old St. Nick and his reindeer on their way, treat them to some special activities around the city. They are all fun, festive, and easy on your budget, so you can indulge and still load up your sleigh!

City Market Christmas for Kids Celebration

On December 8, City Market will host a Christmas for Kids Celebration. The event will take place from 11 am- 2 p. m., and admission is free! The whole family can enjoy activities including cookie-decorating, making ornaments, face-painting, a petting zoo, photos with Father Christmas in the Carriage Tours of Savannah’s Cinderella carriage, and a choir and dance performance.

Looking to ditch the city lights for a night? Opt for festive! The Harbor Festival of Lights is an amazing display of more than 70 light displays set up on Hutchinson Island, just across the Savannah River. There are many activities for all to enjoy including an exotic petting zoo! Guests can drive, walk or ride around the more than 2 mile-long Road Race Track to see these stunning displays. This event will run six weeks during the season — from the day after Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day.

Skatefest is back! Here in Savannah, the only ice we’re accustomed to is in our tea, so it’s always fun to head out to the civic center and channel my inner Michelle Kwan. The civic center will be open for skaters December 8 –January 6. Sessions are 2, 4 and 6 p. m. daily (except Christmas).

If you’re feeling a bit more nostalgic, go back in time with the immortal classic, It’s a Wonderful Life. There will be a showing at the Lucas Theatre on December 14 at 7 p. m.

If you’d like a little more glitter in your stocking — enter the Savannah Theatre, where the halls are decked, and the holiday spirit is in full effect. Experience the 2-hour production, “A Christmas Tradition”, which entails audience participation, plenty of laughs, plenty of glitz and sharing memories of the Christmas standards that you know and love. The show will run until December 23.

We all love holiday treats and the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa has an entire village.  All are invited to see the savory work of art that is the Gingerbread Village. Guests can park at the Westin on Hutchinson Island or take the free ferry ride across the river.

What are some of your favorite things to do around the holidays? Whatever you decide to do make it fun, make it special and remember the reason for the season!
